John’s Steampunk Armor

This is my youngest child.  I’m so proud.

John has developed an interest in Steampunk, so we’ve spent the last six months or so scouring yard sales, thrift shops, and hardware stores so he can turn ordinary Nerf guns and bits and pieces of junk from the basement into “cool Steampunk stuff”.  He’d been asking for foam mats for quite a while, and I’d been putting him off because I just couldn’t envision what use he might have for foam puzzle pieces preschoolers play on.  Then he showed me this video on YouTube:

If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, it’s this guy using foam mats, a heat gun (John used my scrapbooking embossing gun) and a hot glue gun and some spray paint to make some uber-cool armor. Because you never know when you might need some foam armor, right? So here’s the foam when it arrived in the mail (thanks eBay):

And here are the the finished results, about a week later:

Awesome sauce, huh? I know it’s late in the day, but he literally just got it finished, so I’m going to link it up to Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop for the “favorite craft or game that will keep your kid busy for at least twenty minutes” prompt as well as to Capture the Everyday at Adventuroo for the “Your Kid’s Favorite Outfit” prompt. Does this boy have great timing, or what?

  1. Shut your face! this is amazing!!! My little guy (9) is going to have a fit when he sees this. We actually have a couple of extra full face gas masks laying around the house (hubby does explosives, we are preparing for a Post- Apocalyptic task force) and I think we can add that to the outfit.

    1. Yeah, what’s with the “post-apocalyptic” theme, anyway? Do they know something we don’t? Mine is stockpiling bottle caps because he says they’ll be used for currency 🙂 I have to admit I’ve been pretty impressed with the Nerf guns he’s re-made. Gotta support that kind of creativity – they may be paying our nursing home bills one day!

      1. Stockpiling bottle caps just struck me in the right way to produce gales of hysterical laughter! That is just the rad supreme!
