Family Wellness: It’s Not Too Early for the Flu Shot

I was selected by Walgreens and the Clever Girls Collective to write a post about Family Wellness.  This is a cause especially near and dear to my heart, since as a nurse, I am always the go-to person if anyone in my family is sick.  I don’t mind, because after being a nurse for twenty-three years I usually either know the answer to the question or know the perfect person to ask.  A week or so ago my aunt emailed me and mentioned that she’d seen signs up that flu shots were already available.  “Is it too early to get a flu shot?” she asked.  I wasn’t sure, so I asked a nurse I’ve known for years who just happens to be in charge of Infectious Disease at one of the best local hospitals.

She explained that we need a new flu shot each year not because of waning immunity, but because of viral mutation.  In other words, the shot you got last Fall hasn’t “worn off”, and if the flu this year was the same as the flu last year you wouldn’t even need a shot.  But that’s not the case.  Every year the flu mutates and we get a new strain floating around.  Experts decide which strains are more likely to be prevalent in the coming year, and those are the strains they vaccinate for.

So, long story short, it’s not too early to get a flu shot.  And guess what?  Walgreen’s has them available.  I’ll be getting mine soon, and so will all three of the guys (although they don’t know it yet).  It couldn’t be more convenient, and there’s nothing more important than protecting your family’s health.  I’ve gotten flu shots every year for so many years I’ve lost count, not just because I’m so much more likely to be exposed to the flu, but because there are so many people I could possibly infect.

This year, consider not just your own health, but the health of your family before you decide whether or not to get a flu shot.  And if you have any doubts at all if getting a flu shot is safe for members of your family with chronic health conditions don’t hesitate to call your physician – that’s what they’re there for.

  1. This is awesome. When I checked into Walgreens on Foursquare yesterday, there was an option to check in to donate a flu shot voucher to someone who couldn’t afford it. I love it when companies make it easy to help!
