I love having fresh herbs all summer. In fact, when we had our new kitchen built I had the designer add a window box sort of thing at the end of the island near the sink for herbs. It would have been a great idea if that spot would have gotten enough sun, but it just didn’t work out. Now it’s kind of a catch-all for bread, chips, etc. Here it is (please pardon the dirty dishes) and if you have suggestions I’d love to hear them. The baskets below are all filled (alphabetically, of course) with spices.
So this Spring I planted herbs in my Earthbox, which I love and would strongly recommend to anyone trying to grow things in a small space. I sat mine on a stump and for some reason the squirrels didn’t bother it, so I got to keep all the herbs for myself. I planted Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Mint, and two Basil plants. The basil, for some reason, went wild this year. I’ve used it almost daily in recipes, made and frozen lots of pesto, and all this is still left.
I was dreading the first frost, which would put an end to my fresh basil (because I’m not paying the outrageous prices in the grocery for it) until I saw this on Pinterest:

So today, in the brisk Fall weather, I pulled up parts of all my other herbs and planted them in a clearance planter I’d snagged at Target for $5. And I carefully cut sprigs of basil and put them in a jar of water to take root. Only time will tell, but I have high hopes for having fresh basil all through the winter

I dug a couple smaller plants up and brought them inside for the winter. Rosemary and basil. I put them on my kitchen table as a centerpiece for now.
I have my fresh basil growing on our kitchen counter too, I refuse to buy a few leaves at the store. Hope yours turns out.
I’m curious to see how this project works out. I love that you had that little planter-esque box built to your island. Even though it didn’t work, I never would have thought of that. Awesome idea!
You should have seen my builders face when I tried to explain what I wanted. Even after he built it and saw me put the pots of herbs into it he really didn’t “get it”.
