But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. ~ 2 Corinthians 2:14
A friend and I were both searching for a church home at the same time. We were in different parts of the country, and we knew we weren’t both looking for the same thing, but we both knew that, somehow, we’d know it when we found it. We had long conversations about the many things that can speak to your soul in church. Your physical surroundings, the people you worship with, the music, the scriptures being read, the sermon or homily. Sometimes it’s something that may go unnoticed by most people, like a priest who looks up and smiles at a baby being loud during communion rather than scowling. Sometimes it’s whether the people in the crowded pew are willing to make room for your family or ignore you. Maybe it’s even the incessant ringing of someone’s cell phone who is too rude to turn it off during services. Every now and then it’s something really special. I went to a Friday noon Mass and an older woman slipped into the pew in front of me just as the service started. I knew immediately she was wearing Emeraude body powder, which my paternal grandmother had always worn. I sat through the rest of the service enveloped in wonderful memories of my grandmother and how she’d be lovingly tending her flowers this time of year. The homily was excellent, and very thought-provoking, but my favorite part of the service was the woman who smelled like my grandmother.
