A Mouse and a Mom-Fail Moment

MiceWe live in an old brick house.  I’ve been told by exterminators that mice can enter a house through a hole the size of a dime, so we’ve had our share of mice trying to come in from the cold in the Fall.  One particular Fall was especially memorable, though.  John was about four, and had been playing in the basement (probably rolling little cars across the pool table) while I was cooking supper and Michael was on the phone (a business call).  John came scampering up the steps, calling, “Mommy, look what I got!”

I turned, and he was holding a mouse by the tail and smiling ear-to-ear.  A good mom would have taken the mouse and flung it into the back yard, and then thoroughly scrubbed and disinfected her little one’s hands, reminding the little scamp not to pick up wild animals, no matter how small.  Not this mom.  I let out a blood-curdling scream and ran out of the room.  Yeah, not my proudest moment.

Michael, thankfully, is calm under pressure.  Without even breaking stride in his phone conversation he grabbed a paper towel, took the mouse (dead) from our precious child, and walked it out to the trash can.  I’d recovered enough by this time to do the scrubbing and lecturing, but Michael has never let me live down the “John caught a mouse” story. *sigh* I could have used PestWorld that Fall.  They might have saved me from years of embarrassing re-telling of that particular story.
