Fear of Uncertainty

Saints and Scripture Sunday
This isn’t a scripture, it’s actually a quote from a book I’m reading: The Gifts of Imperfection, by Brene Brown

“Faith is a place of mystery, where we find the courage to believe in what we cannot see and the strength to let go of our fear of uncertainty.”

That really resonated with me, because my biggest fears (and maybe everyone’s?) are fears of uncertainty.  The “what if”s that keep me awake nights, paralyze me with fear, make me tremble and sob for no reason I can articulate.  If having Faith is being able to let go of all that then that’s certainly what I want, but I’m not there yet.

  1. Phew — we are so cut out of the same cloth. The unknown, and things I can’t control, set me into a tailspin. (i.e., bursting into a sobbing mess at the urologist’s office, after I’d dealt with the darn kidney stone for a week)

Sigh — it’s a HUGE leap of faith for me to step back, and let God lead. (Salsa dancing, anyone?)

Thanks for faithfully being a part of Saints and Scripture Sunday.

  2. I follow a site called Tiny Buddha. The other day they had a saying. It went “The Quality of a persons life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty one can comfortably deal with.” I have thought about this a lot and it has helped me to remember it at times.

  3. I”m not sure any of us are! But I am learning that 90% of the “what if’s” never happen, and so worrying about something I couldn’t change anyway does absolutely no good.

    How are you doing today?

    1. I wish I wouldn’t waste my time and mental energy (both of which are in short supply) on worrying, but it’s a hard habit to break! I’m doing OK today, just tired for no apparent reason, but I’m not going to fight it – today WILL involve a nap 🙂 Are you hanging in there with this heat?
