My word shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose. ~ Isaiah 55:11
I have a pamphlet I picked up at church on Ash Wednesday with scriptures and reflections for every day of Lent. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with it at first. The pamphlet I’d picked up for Advent was wonderful, with morning and evening reflections and inspiring scriptures. This one has been kind of “meh”. Of course, that might just be me. This week, though, Tuesday’s scripture was the one above, and the reflection was about Jean Luc Picard and his oft-heard command to “Make it so.” The author talked about how that takes trust in one’s crew, and that’s the faith that God has in us, and the faith we have in Him: “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” (Yeah, I know that’s not the latest version at Mass, but I don’t have the new one memorized yet.) We’re a Star Trek household, and when the inevitable Kirk vs. Picard debate arises I always choose Picard. Now on difficult days it will make me smile to envision God listening carefully to our prayers and then saying, “Make it so.”
