There Will Be A New Teen in The Family This Weekend

I took my twelve-year-old with me when I went to vote on Tuesday.  He’s always willing to tag along because the church where we vote keeps a popcorn popper and trays of cookies in the hallway for the voters.  So he was scarfing down treats while I was trying to decide which was the lesser evil, and when I came out he had a huge grin on his face.  Evidently the gentleman manning the popcorn popper had asked him if this was his first time voting!  Now I’ll grant you he looks and sounds about fifteen, but eighteen?!  Anyway, he was pretty pleased with himself the rest of the day.

My neck pain has been worse than usual lately (just stress-related, I’m sure) and I haven’t managed to cook supper every night.  I know, I know, you’re thinking, “So what?” but that’s pretty much the only thing I do around here with regularity.  My husband does the laundry and the heavy cleaning, balances the checkbook, etc.  But I did manage to make chicken fried steak from the recipe on Beverly’s Back Porch last night, as well as mashed potatoes as per her instructions.  They guys were SO thrilled!  Then John said, “Beverly should have her own show.  She’d be like Emeril, but funnier and more unpredictable.”  That’s such an apt description I giggled the rest of the night.

I am so far behind on NaNoWriMo it isn’t even funny.  Life is just getting in the way and I can’t concentrate to save my life.

Just so you’ll know for future reference (and hopefully you’ll never need to know) disability insurance isn’t like car insurance.  Even if you are sick or injured and have documentation from a physician that you are unable to work they can still decide not to pay you, or delay paying you for a nearly indefinite amount of time.  I haven’t been paid since early September.  Can you imagine if any other type of insurance worked that way?  “Oh, you wrecked your car?  Well, we may pay to fix it in a few months.  Or not.  Good luck with that.”

I went to the doctor earlier this week, and evidently I’ve lost fifteen pounds in the last few months.  I didn’t realize because I’m overweight and don’t voluntarily weigh myself and I spend as much time as possible in my jammies rather than real clothes.  So three cheers for the Constant Pain and Outrageous Stress Diet!  Anyone want to sign up?  I thought not.

My baby will turn thirteen on Saturday, so I am now officially halfway through my fourteen years of having a teenage boy in the house.  I don’t know if John’s teenage years will be harder or easier than Aaron’s, but I know they’ll be different.  John has his own way of doing everything, including growing up.

Yesterday I watched the DVRd Tim Gunn: Behind the Seams show that evidently ran the week after the Project Runway finale.  It was fascinating and sweet, and I went through half a box of Kleenex.  I just love Tim Gunn.  In a world of reality TV where being mean, obscene, and stupid is encouraged he stands out as such a knowledgeable, generous, honest, and compassionate person.

    1. They were ABSOLUTELY meant as kind words 🙂 Funny and unpredictable are goals he aspires to! (although I think he met both goals by the time he could talk)

  1. As far as that insurance stuff, girl I work for an insurance company and HAVE for the last 6 years.

Never will I understand the reasoning behind most of the insanity.

    1. That actually makes me feel much better. I was beginning to get a little paranoid that a group of people was sitting around in a break room in Dallas, munching on cookies and saying, “Hey, you know what would make that Angie chick REALLY crazy?!”
