Our New Gallery Wall

This time last year we painted the living room, and until this past weekend we hadn’t re-hung any pictures.  We didn’t want to make any rash decisions, you see.  But there were a few “gallery wall” tutorials on Pinterest that got me thinking. . .

There were some that suggested using graph paper and carefully measuring each picture, some that had templates you could use, but I kind of liked the “trace everything on kraft paper, pull out the painter’s tape, and just move things around until you like it” approach. I snapped a quick picture with my phone during the kraft paper stage:

I labeled each piece of paper with a sharpie indicating who was in it and what direction it needed to hang. Then here’s the cool part – you can tap the nail and hanger right into the wall and then pull the kraft paper off afterwards! Here’s what we ended up with:

the full wall, from hallway door to front door

And here are shots of just the left side and just the right side. We ended up including twenty-two pictures total, and six of the smallest ones are mounted on black racks that were meant to display dishes. I think it gives it a little more variety.

Most of the frames, especially the smaller ones, are dollar store frames I bought when we were newlyweds. Nothing matches anything else, but right now that’s okay. It’s just nice to have pictures on the wall again.  And it was actually so much fun we ended up hanging pictures in our bedroom (can’t remember what year we painted in there) and moving my two Judith Cheney prints and the two original sketches Michael had framed for my college graduation to more visible locations.  Pretty good for a Saturday evening, huh?

  1. I love it! Blank walls make me slightly insane. Sadly though, I am out of wall space, so I like to randomly walk around my house looking for things to take down. So far, I haven’t found anything I can live without. Maybe I’ll start hanging things outside.

    1. Surely there’s something on Pinterest for that. Maybe a big piece of rusty metal that you let the kids paint, then seal with a marine sealer, then mount on the back wall of the house? I think a field trip to a junkyard may be in order . . .

  2. Why do I think we’d do this project using the measuring and graph paper method?? 😉
I love your new wall! Can’t wait to see it in person!
