Pumpkin Spice Spritz Cookies for Dogs

They look kinda like Christmas trees, right?

I made mine with a cookie press, put you can also just make them as drop cookies. ย It’s not like the dog will complain!

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

1 Tbsp light brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

4 Tbsp shortening (I used Crisco)

1 large egg

1/2 cup milk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees, Mix all ingredients and press or drop onto cookie sheet. ย Bake for 12-15 minutes. ย These cookies have no preservatives, so use them within a few days!

  1. I hope Sam doesn’t get too excited! These sound good enough for people cookies. I don’t do the cookie press for me let alone the puppies. I think Annie and Mazzy will love these. I think they are getting bored with their Cheese and Oatmeal Cookies. Thanks

  2. I tried these with a cookie press, and the dough was WAY too thin to hold any kind of shape. I squeezed the dough back into the bowl and blended in another half cup of wheat flour, which helped, but I still didn’t find the dough to be a good consistency for the cookie press. It was far too stretchy. All of the pieces stayed pointy when I pulled the press up and remained that way after baking. My chief suspect is the whole wheat flour, which probably has too much gluten for a cookie press recipe. I use a cookie press for “human” recipes quite frequently, so I don’t believe it is a matter of technique.

    1. Sadly, I think you’re right about the wheat flour. I always just assumed it was my poor cookie-press technique until recently, when I found a great human cookie press recipe and they came out perfectly. I’d like to make pretty dog treats with the cookie press, but I think I’ll have to sacrifice looks for nutrition ๐Ÿ™

  3. First, I need to tell you that my Havanese, Zuzu Petals, loved these treats and really didn’t care that the shape wasn’t just right! ;^) I’ll make these again for her, just not with the cookie press.

    Confession: I was making these to bring to a birthday party…for one of Zuzu’s littermates. (I know, I know! LOL.) They are two years old today! So I was trying to use the “2” disc from this press: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MPJBM4. That’s the only reason I cared even a little about the appearance.

    I’m with you on the nutrition in principle, but these will be such a small part of any dog’s daily diet, right? The pumpkin is good for them, so I’d be willing to swap in plain ol’ refined flour if that would do the trick. I’ll reserve them for special occasions….

  5. I tried these this evening and the dough was way to thick and sticky when I tried to use the cookie press. I added some more milk to thin it out but it was still too sticky and didn’t come out cleanly. They are now in the oven as drop cookies. hope they turn out :/

    1. Those were my very first try with my cookie press. I didn’t realize until MONTHS later what the appropriate texture should have been – LOL! Thankfully, my dogs never complain when my recipes don’t work out. It’s a great way to learn a new technique before baking for the humans in the house, though ๐Ÿ™‚
