Her heels tapped softly on the terra cotta tile as she stepped through an archway and into a kitchen straight out of Southern Living magazine. Her smile turned into a laugh of delight as she caressed the Sub Zero refrigerator and the smaller version for wine the way another woman might touch a coveted fur coat. The room was flooded with natural light, and the wicker furniture with its bright floral print pillows needed only a sweet tea and a good book to be Anna’s version of heaven on earth. Then she heard the scratching.
She followed the sound past a palm that nearly reached the ceiling to a doorway into a large mudroom/laundry room. Everything was immaculate, as it had been everywhere else she’d seen. The scratching was coming from the back door. Anna unlocked and opened it, only to suddenly find herself stumbling over two muddy, bedraggled little animals who flew through the screen door’s doggie door and proceeded to chase each other around the laundry room and kitchen until the entire floor was a maze of tiny footprints. Then both filthy mop heads hopped onto the love seat that overlooked the yard, rolling blissfully around on the white cushions patterned with coral blooms and deep green leaves. And now, mud.
