Day Three Without Internet – Things Are Getting Ugly

— 1 —

Greetings from Panera.  Thank you, God, for creating raspberry tea and free wifi, because without them I may have committed a mortal sin by now.  Specifically, a violent act involving Time Warner Cable.

I know I’ve ranted mentioned before about the problems we’ve had with their cable service, phone service, billing, and customer service.  Well, their sole product we were still moderately satisfied with – our internet service – is gone.  As in we have none, it took several phone calls to reach a human being, and several calls after that for a human to finally tell us they don’t know why we don’t have internet, and that they’ll send someone to take a look at it in a week.  A week.  What are the odds I can get some other company to come hook me up sooner than that?  I’d say pretty high.

I don’t think I have unreasonable expectations for customer service.  Really all I expect from anyone is honesty and common courtesy.  I don’t expect competence anymore – we can’t even get that from our country’s leaders, so how can we possibly expect it in a drive-thru restaurant?  Except, of course, Chic-Fil-A.  Anyone else think a Truett Cathy / Dan Cathy Presidential ticket sounds like a reasonable options.  Yes, the whole country would be shut down on Sundays, but we’d certainly got one hell of a lot of work done the rest of the week.

And medical care?  Forget about it.  It’s all about the money, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better.  Don’t get sick or injured, and plan on a career in any health care field in the near future.  Buy a Chic-Fil-A franchise instead.  (Pardon me while I go refill my tea.)

Grumpy?  Yes, I am.  I have a dozen blog posts I want to write, but I can’t sit in Chic-Fil-A or Panera for extended periods of time to get wifi access and still expect to be able to walk to my car unaided.  But have I heard any results from my disability hearing?  Of course not.

Thankfully, my family is putting up with me rather well.  My eldest seems a little overly anxious to return to college, but that may be just because he’s about to finish up.  My youngest has offered to help me discuss our situation with the next Time Warner salesperson to come by the house, although I suspect he just wants to post it on You Tube.  My husband has found it rather entertaining that I wake him up in the middle of the night, screaming our phone number and other answers to TWC’s automated questions into the pillow.

As always, I don’t appreciate what I have until it’s gone.  I’d gotten so used to being able to curl up in bed with my iPad and stream Netflix, download another new free book as soon as I finish my current one, and pull up answers to my questions by walking over to the desktop.  I am very thankful this didn’t happen after school started, especially since this will be John’s first semester at an IT magnet high school and I’m expecting his homework to be more dependent on the technology we have at home than ever before.  With that in mind – who’s your family’s favorite internet provider?  I’m frugal, but I’m absolutely willing to pay more for a faster, more consistent connection and better customer service.
