The Shower Orchid

This is just a little aside – something I found interesting. Over three years ago I threw my eldest niece, Lauren, a bridal shower. She and her mom dropped by the next day and brought me a beautiful orchid plant. I’d never had an orchid, but I really wanted to keep it alive, so I did a lot of research. Evidently orchids survive on benign neglect and luck. And they can live one hundred fifty years. So I’ve had this orchid in my kitchen, and although its leaves have looked healthy enough and the roots keep growing like crazy it never bloomed again – not until a couple of weeks ago.
This is that orchid on the day Lauren, Emily, and Dina threw my soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Catherine, a bridal shower.  Full bloom.  Weird, huh?  I guess I’ll just have to wait for the next cousin to get engaged and see what this mysterious plant does.  I suppose I’d better re-pot it after these blooms fade.  There are nine Ballard cousins and that’s a lot of blooming to expect out of the original pot 😉
