Tuna Melt Cat Treats

No, I don’t have cats.  Michael and I went through our cat phase early and moved on to our dog phase years ago and I foresee no litter boxes in my future.  But I went to visit a friend who’d recently had surgery and she has two adorable cats.  Since my dogs no refuse to eat any treats that aren’t homemade (my Aunt Beverly is laughing down at me from heaven) I thought I’d give cat treats a try.  I hunted for recipes on the internet, but I couldn’t find anything that looked interesting, so I created my own.  I waited to post this until after Cricket and Grayson had given them their seal of approval.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Add to large mixing bowl:
one 12-ounce can of water-packed tuna, drained
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Mix until blended.
Gradually add 2 1/2 – 3 cups wheat flour until dough is no longer sticky.
Roll out to 1/4 inch thick, cut into your favorite shape.

Place close together on stoneware baking sheet or other baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool and seal tightly, because these really smell fishy.
Yield: one hundred treats

*These ended up being too large – cutting them in half would have made a more cat-appropriate size treat.  Or to make it really easy you could just cut the dough into strips and then into tiny rectangles.
